Twenty years on, and it’s hard to say what Resident Evil stands for.
It may have been the series that coined the phrase ‘survival horror’, but that idea is largely absent from recent instalments. It felt like Resi had lost its way, and identity, focussing more on action and spectacle over suspense and horror.
Resident Evil 7, thankfully, suffers from none of those anxieties. It’s a confident statement of what Resident Evil looks like today – and that’s an intense survival horror experience, with mystery and exploration at its core. And while it may look very different from the rest of the series – shifting setting and perspective – RE7 in fact feels much closer to the 1996 original than any other game in the series.
