With the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, there’s a lot of focus on the next generation of games, but that shouldn’t really overshadow the fact that many of the year’s best titles were indeed made for current generation systems.

Whether you’re buying for the person on gaming’s bloodshed edge or who’s happy with the game system they already have, you have plenty of good options to choose from:

Tomb Raider

Publisher: Square Enix

Systems: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

It’s actually hard to recall these days, but when « Tomb Raider » was first released, it was the game play that stood out, not Lara Croft’s measurements. This little reboot takes things to the beginning, and the results? Simply Incredible! Instead of an Aristocratic Lara, you find yourself face to face with a younger Lara Croft, who’s shipwrecked on an island. You get to see the character grow as she tries to survive. It’s a game that makes Lara and all of the Lara Croft Series more relevant for today’s audience. It’s well-acted, well-paced and is pleasantly surprising.

The Last of Us

Publisher: Sony

Systems: PS3

Sony’s PS3 Naughty Dog Studios has been responsible for some of the most amazing games you’d ever find on a PS3, including the « Unchanted » series. But, it once again outdid itself with this horror/survival/action game. It’s well acted, well placed, scary, and the real draw is the emotional bond you’ll feel with the characters. It’s about two survivors a 14 year old girl and an adult trying to survive. The story never goes the way you would expect it, keeping everyone captivated.

Grand Theft Auto V

Publisher: Take-Two

Systems: Xbox 360, PS3

Rockstar Games took the best elements of their previous titles and improved on them in Grand Theft Auto V, making the game more engaging that will appeal even to people who’ve resisted the series in the past. Added to the game play is vibrant online world where players can do anything from hitting a round of golf to investing in the game’s stock market. It’s addictive and diverse, with massive sales already.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Publisher: Ubisoft internet

Systems: Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Xbox One, PS4

The latest installments of the popular series sailed its way into new settings, piracy on the sea. Set during the early 18th century, the game incorporates the real world historical figures with action. Among the pirates, you’ll run into Blackbeard, Calico Jack, Charles Vance and Ben Hornigold. You also get an open world feel this time and it lets players explore the island as they feel.
