If you get the dreaded red lights on the front of your Xbox don’t just jump to the conclusion that your Xbox console is doomed and you are going to be out some major cash for a replacement.

The series of red lights can mean different things. Some people, when faced with the red lights have assumed that they are experiencing the Red Ring of Death when it could be something else entirely. But no matter what the red lights are not a good thing.

Each of the four lights in divided up to separate quadrants and each quadrant means a different thing when it turns red.

If all the lights but the first one is lighting up, you have a system failure and more than likely will be sending your console into the repair shop. Before you do that though, unhook all cords, let the Xbox cool and then see if you get a different response when you reattach them.

If it is the second quadrant that is lit up, then you have just played too many hours of Rock Band 2. Your system has overheated. Turn it off and let it cool.

Now that you have some time on your hands, look at where you have your Xbox located. Electronic components need to have ventilation. If you have your Xbox in a closed in area or next to some other heat producing unit like a DVD player, you need to find another location or you are headed for the Red Ring of Death.

Flashing lights in the third quadrant indicates a hardware failure and you will more than likely have to send it in. But this can be repaired as opposed to replacing the console entirely.

If all four lights are flashing, check the cords. This usually means that a cord is loose and just needs to be inserted more securely. You will hear a click when the cord is in place properly.

If you do think if you have the Red Ring of Death, unplug your console from everything and let it cool. Move it if you need to so that it will have plenty of ventilation, do not set anything on top of your Xbox or under it. Once the console has time to thoroughly cool, reattach all cords and see what happens.

Hopefully you can recover your Xbox without a repairs or replacement. If the things that you have tried at home haven’t had any effect on your Xbox console, call the customer support number. They will also have some tips for you to try before sending it in.
